How We Test & Rate AI Tools
Most directories rank tools by affiliate payout. We don't. Here is the exact process behind every rating on this site β published so you can hold us to it.
1. Hands-on testing
Before a tool gets a rating, we run it on a realistic task in its category: an actual article draft for writing tools, a real repo task for coding assistants, a genuine dataset for analytics tools. Screenshots and outputs are archived internally so verdicts trace back to evidence.
2. The 5-point editor rating
- β’ Capability (40%) β how well it does the core job vs the best alternative.
- β’ Value (25%) β output per dollar, free-tier generosity, pricing transparency.
- β’ Usability (15%) β time-to-first-value for a new user.
- β’ Trust (10%) β data practices, licensing clarity, company track record.
- β’ Momentum (10%) β shipping cadence and direction of travel.
3. User reviews & votes
Community ratings are collected on-site, moderated for spam and shill patterns (duplicate device signatures, vendor IP ranges, copy-paste bursts), and displayed separately from our editor rating β we never blend the two silently.
4. Freshness cycle
New tools are ingested weekly from launch platforms and user submissions, then human-approved. Pricing and feature claims on existing pages are re-verified monthly, highest-traffic pages first. Every page shows its last-updated date.
5. Money never moves rankings
We earn from display ads, disclosed affiliate links, and clearly-labeled "Featured" placements. Featured slots are visually marked, never mixed into organic rankings, and affiliate availability has zero input into scores. If a top-rated tool has no affiliate program, it stays top-rated.
